What does a Mckenzie Friend do?
A McKenzie Friend offers support to individuals representing themselves in court, particularly in family matters. While not solicitors, they provide valuable assistance throughout the legal process.
What a Mckenzie Friend Can and Can't do
A McKenzie Friend can provide invaluable assistance. They can:
✅ Sit with you in court for emotional and practical support
✅ Take notes during hearings
✅ Help you organise paperwork and court bundles
✅ Quietly give advice or reminders during the hearing
✅ Explain court procedures and terminology in plain English
✅ Help draft statements or forms outside of court
Generally, they cannot:
❌ Speak on your behalf in court
❌ Question witnesses
❌ Address the judge
❌ Sign court documents for you
👉 In very limited cases, a judge may give permission for them to speak, but this is rare and at the judge’s discretion.
